Interview

Just returned from a great wedding in Virginia. It was a great trip with Ben, Ann, Patrick and Rachel. We visited 3 national parks, did some camping and kicked Dave out of the brotherhood successfully. All in a good weekend.

Today though, I go in for my interview. We'll see how it goes. The process should be about 4 hours. In coming to the interview I have to bring a self-assessment for the physical fitness portion. Yeah, I almost died, literally, completing that. It was crazy. I was going to do the self-assessment at 4pm in the afternoon. It was going to be 90 degrees and super humid, so Patrick was able to help me do it in the morning instead. It still ended up being in the 80's with high humidity. I did the sit-ups and the 300m sprint. After the sprint I felt a little dizzy and nauseous. I pushed through it to do the push-ups and the 1.5mi run, but my run time was quite a bit slower than normal. After the run I was completely exhausted. I poured water on myself and laid on my back on the track. Things weren't getting better, so I went to the car and turned on the A/C. I thought I could make it home, so I took off, but I almost did not make it. At the end of the 4-mile trip home, things were spinning. I thought I was going to throw up/pass out. My arms were both tingling up to my shoulders. I had shortness of breath. I made it home, jammed the car in park and stumbled inside to collapse on the floor It was all really strange. I was able to get Rachel on the phone, who is a nurse, and she quickly thought heat exhaustion. I poured water on myself, drank lots of water then laid in the bathtub to try and cool my body temp down. I still could not sit up or stand without getting extremely dizzy and nauseous. After about an hour of this, I forced myself to sit up, so I would throw up. That did the trick. Any cookies that were in my stomach were no longer there. After that, I felt great.

I still need to do a little research. I'm not sure why that all happened. I was drinking water. I had only done a minute of sit-ups and a 45-second sprint before I started feeling it. I exert myself more than that in hotter/humid weather semi-frequently. Whatever happened, I don't ever want it to happen again. That was crazy.

I didn't end up scoring enough points to pass the test, so I'm going to need to retest at some point in the near future. I've got a little work to do. Hopefully, it won't be too bad.

Were you over hydrated maybe? I dunno how much water you'd been drinking. But over hydration will do that to you. I can't imagine it was heat exhaustion. For what you were doing you really didn't need to hydrate all that much, especially not with just straight water. Let me know if you figure out what it was.

I think your over diagnosing yourself. Just sounds like you ate something that didn't agree with you. You had too much blood in your gut trying to digest whatever it was, and too little in your head, where it was getting hot. Next time, drink a bottle of water the night before, and one in the morning with a powerbar/banana 1-2 hours before your test. And make sure you warm up with a nice jog before you go all out!
